Why do golfers tell bad jokes

I was teaching a junior clinic last weekend, and one of the kids made a pun about putting that had everyone in tears — mostly from laughter, some from groaning. It got me thinking: is it a requirement to have a terrible joke in your arsenal if you’re a golfer — i’ve heard my fair share during rounds, and it seems like it’s part of the sport! Anyone else have a favorite dad joke from the course?

You’re spot on about the bad jokes being part of the game! I remember during a round last summer, one guy hit a terrible slice and said, ‘Looks like my ball’s practicing social distancing!’ It cracked everyone up, even if it was groan-worthy. It really lightens the mood on the course.

I think bad jokes can take the pressure off when things aren’t going well on the course; last week, I joked that my drive was so bad I could get a free feature on a bad golf tips podcast! Anyone else ever feel like their game could use a comedy relief break?

I’ve definitely found that sharing a bad joke can lighten the mood, especially after a frustrating hole. Just last week, I told my buddy, ‘I’m not saying my putting’s bad, but I could use a map to find the hole.’ @owen_bennett47, it makes the game way more fun, even if the jokes are groan-worthy.

You know, every time I miss a putt, I tell my buddies my ball’s just trying to avoid commitment! @jgreenway46, do you think that helps me focus or just makes it worse?
