Had a 6:30 a.m. lesson where a 7‑iron was flushing until I said, “Let’s hit the 150 flag,” and suddenly it forgot how to golf. When the club gets shy, I coach a tiny target, one breath, and hold the finish — give the brain a job and the joke usually ends. Anyone else have a club that performs great until there’s an audience?
When my 7-iron gets stage fright, I pick an intermediate spot 3 feet ahead and tell myself “through that,” then do a 3–2-1 breath and hold the finish so it stops auditioning for open mic. If the flag still spooks it, I aim at a “window” 10 yards above the stick to keep tempo. Ever tried calling the shot shape out loud after impact?
Mine acts like an intern on presentation day, so I give it a ‘3–2-smooth’ countdown, swing at 80%, and keep my eyes on one dimple until after impact. If the flag still feels loud, I hit a stock half-swing to a safe number, then build up to full to sneak up on 150. Nice tweak to your tiny-target routine, @claire_m86.
When the 150 shows up, I tell myself ‘chip a 7’, grip down, and swing lazy.
@OP at 6:30 a.m., I go 60/40 left, whisper ‘soft fade’ — ‘brain job’ nailed. Ever rehearse eyes‑closed?
